#1 Don’t second-guess: Your first instinct is usually correct. Do not go back through the test and change your answers. Statistics prove that your first answer choice is typically correct.

#2 Study like it’s game day: Make it your priority to study for 1-2 hours a day. Try and study at the time the test will be taken and under real testing conditioning.

#4 BE CLEVER: Make sure you read the directions and learn them by heart. Skip around and do the work that is the easiest for you. The math and vocabulary questions are in order of difficulty. All questions are worth the same, eliminate one choice and guess.

#5 The essay: Please keep in mind the essay portion of the SAT isn’t looking for creativity. Make it easy for them to read, if you can legibly write in script do so. Long essay’s with more paragraph breaks is strongly recommended.

#6 CONSIDER THE ACT: The ACT is an alternative standardized test. Mostly taken by students on the west coast now it’s taken by students on the east. Colleges across the country have finally accepted the test instead or in addition to the more famous SAT. The ACT has a science section which for some students maybe a better fit. #7 AVOID USING A CALCULATOR: Use your brain and guesstimate, brush up on your times tables. Using a calculator takes up valuable time and you’ll find that there won’t be a need for it.

#8 ONLY TAKE IT ONCE: I suggest students try and make the first time your only time. Colleges only count your highest score of each section when formally calculating your strength as an applicant. Like on a date you’d want to put your best foot forward. Don’t take the SAT for the first time as a practice.

#9 Take a practice timed exam: The SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes, and is usually administered in the morning. To build stamina I suggest you take several practice exams.
